🚗 Vehicle Security Advice – Keyless Entry Theft

We are seeing an increase in vehicles being stolen without keys, particularly those fitted with keyless entry and start systems. Offenders are using devices to relay the signal from your key fob inside your home, allowing them to unlock and start your car as if they had the key.

⚠️ How it happens:

Thieves stand near your house (often by the front door or window) with a relay device. This picks up the signal from your key fob inside and transmits it to another device near your vehicle, tricking the car into unlocking and starting.

✅ How to protect your vehicle:

1. Use a signal-blocking (Faraday) pouch

Store all keys, including spares, in a Faraday pouch when at home.

Test it by standing next to your car—if it still unlocks, the pouch isn’t working.

2. Keep keys away from doors and windows

Avoid leaving keys near entry points where signals can be easily picked up.

3. Enable additional security features

Some vehicles allow you to disable keyless entry via settings—check your manual.

Use steering wheel locks or visible deterrents.

4. Lock and secure your vehicle properly

Always check your vehicle is locked before leaving it.

Avoid relying solely on hearing the lock sound—physically check.

5. Consider CCTV and exterior lighting

Well-lit areas and cameras can deter offenders.

6. Update vehicle software (if applicable)

Some manufacturers release updates to improve security.

📢 Key message:

Keyless theft is quick, silent, and often happens overnight. Taking simple steps like using a Faraday pouch and keeping keys secure can significantly reduce your risk.
